Program Features

The ISEE consists of carefully constructed and standardized verbal and quantitative reasoning tests that measure a student’s capability for learning, and reading comprehension and mathematics achievement tests that provide specific information about an individual’s strengths and weaknesses in those areas. All levels include a timed essay written in response to an assigned topic. The essay is not scored, but a copy is forwarded to the recipient schools along with the Individual Student Report, which shows scaled scores, percentiles, and stanines.

The ISEE may only be taken once within a six-month period. It can only be taken when making a formal application to a school. Practice administrations are not allowed.

ISEE Student Guide

The ISEE Student Guide contains important information about registration procedures, dates and locations, school codes, and test information.

Testing with Accommodations

Click here to download the 2008-2009 Testing with Accommodations brochure.
Click here to download the list of ISEE Test Sites Offering Accommodations.

ERB will make every effort to arrange special administrations to accommodate students who are unable to take the ISEE under standard conditions because they have a documented physical challenge or learning difference.

You do not have to complete the ISEE bubble registration form if you are submitting the Testing with Accommodations brochure. If you would like a copy mailed to you, please email iseeaccommodations@erbtest.org or call 1-800-989-3721, ext. 9813, or 1-212-672-9813

Remote Location Administration

We will make every effort to arrange remote administrations for students who reside in an area in the United States or abroad where regularly scheduled test site administrations are not available. This service is only available to a student applying to an ERB member school which administers the ISEE at its site.

Call 1-800-989-3721×9812, or 1-212-672-9812 or email iseeremote@erbtest.org to discuss procedures. Please schedule at least three weeks in advance, as additional time must be allowed for shipment of test materials.

Ben D. Wood Fee Waiver Program

Dr. Ben D. Wood was the first chair of ERB in 1927 and remained engaged in the activities of the organization throughout his life. A grant to defray the costs for testing was established in his honor in 1985.

Students in financial need may apply for a Ben D. Wood fee waiver by contacting the school to which they are applying. Only ISEE test sites distribute fee waivers to students. The ISEE Operations Office and the ERB office do not distribute fee waivers to families. Fee waivers cover only the large group testing fee ($80).

Registration must occur by mail, as the signed fee waiver must accompany the registration form. Fee waiver inquiries should be addressed to the school(s) to which the candidate is applying, not to the ISEE Operations Office.

Preparation

ERB publishes a manual, What to Expect on the ISEE, to help students prepare for this important exam. This book will give you information about, and an opportunity to experience, the kind of test the ISEE really is. The book begins with general information about the purpose of the ISEE and what it measures. The next section includes sample questions for all levels of the test, with full explanations for choosing the right answer to each question. By answering these questions and reviewing the explanations carefully, you will learn about the exact item types that you will find when you take the actual ISEE.

If you are applying for either grades 7 or 8 and will be taking the Middle Level ISEE or grades 9 through 12 and will be taking the Upper Level ISEE, you will also find in the book half-length practice tests for these levels. Each of these tests has more of the same kinds of items found in the actual Upper and Middle level versions of the ISEE. Since the Lower Level is in its first edition, there are no prior versions that can form the basis for the performance comparisons. Therefore, for the Lower Level only, there is no practice test, but you will find about 25 percent more sample questions than in the other two levels. The directions for answering these simple questions are the same as on the ISEE, and the answer sheet included in the book can be completed as if the student were taking the actual test.

The cost of the book is $15. All three levels are covered in one book. This includes shipping and handling in the United States. The book is sent through the U.S. Post Office using Priority Mail Service. Please allow 5-7 business days for delivery upon receipt of your order.

You can order What to Expect on the ISEE either on the What to Expect Order Form , or online by clicking here.

Sample Score Report

After testing, answer sheets and essays are sent to the ISEE Operations Office for machine scoring of the four multiple choice sections and production of the Individual Student Report (ISR). Click here for a sample Student Report.

Copies of the ISR and the essay, which is not scored, may be sent to six schools and/or counselors. Schools will receive a copy of the student score report and essay in approximately 7- 10 business days. Optional reporting services, such as Telephone Reporting, Additional Reports, Handscoring, and Rescoring, are available at additional costs. Please refer to page 7 of the ISEE Student Guide for more details on these services.
